The precipitation hinders the loading of the last Dutch onions. Since processors cannot load onions due to the rain, the number of transactions ex-country is nil.
Most of the Dutch onions have already arrived. Plots that have not yet been cleared are mainly located in the new cultivation areas in eastern Netherlands. Some of these onions are still tied up. The rain and weather forecasts for next week therefore ensure that the off-shore period will last until at least mid-October.
Demand is increasing
Since many onions were exported to Africa in the first weeks of this season, demand has been limited in recent weeks. At the end of week 40, the demand for Dutch onions increased somewhat again. The well-known destinations from West Africa have again entered the Dutch onion market, increasing the work for exporters. The demand does not only come from Africa, but is currently present worldwide.
Brazil has made quite a move on the Dutch onion market in recent weeks. They already took big this season 30.000 ton onions off. However, the supply to Brazil has been at a standstill in the last 2 weeks. The country has now received sufficient Dutch onions and has switched to one of its own crops.
Calm mood
The stock exchange committees in Emmeloord and Middenmeer endorsed their listings this week with a calm mood. There are therefore few changes compared to last week. When the quotations are added together, the onions paid dry from the shed are €10 to €12,50. Prices are lower on land. Since processors cannot load onions due to the rain, the number of transactions from the field is nil.
