The onion quotations are the indicator for the Dutch onion market. This week there are clear differences between the colors. The growers are noticing that the trade is turning to red onions again.
If you want to know how the prices of Dutch onions are doing, take a look at the regional listing. That is briefly the message that the growers with free onions receive when they are asked what the onions are doing. For yellow onions, the top remains. That means a spread of €30 to €60 for the 12,50% to 14% of coarse onions. Only in Goes was the bottom lifted: by €0,50 to €13.
Red onions turn mood
De listing for red onions, the mood has turned from calm to firm. That was reflected in the listing as an increase of €0,50 for the 30% to 60% coarse. The 60% up was up $1,75. It was striking that there was again a quotation on the plate for the 0% to 30% coarse onions. This was because a large batch with a fine grade had been traded. This does not appear to have a structural character, however.
The better red onion trade is partly dependent on shorter-term supply demand and partly on longer-term delivery. The onions that have been harvested before the rain and have a size, are particularly attractive to buyers.
