Today there are many countries that purchase Dutch onions. A new destination presented itself this week, because onions were exported to India for the first time.
The packers currently have their hands full with work; many of the packaged onions find their way to Africa. It is still unclear how many onions can still be exported to Senegal, Africa's largest buyer. The current licenses are expiring, although there are rumors of an extension until mid-January. The other destinations in Africa are currently fully supplied. But many of these destinations switch to their own harvest in January.
This week onions were exported to India for the first time. The countries that are normally supplied by India have recently purchased many red onions from the Netherlands. Yellow onions are now also exported to those countries. It is expected that India will have its own onions again by mid-January.
Purchasing temper tempered
Quite a few onions were purchased in week 49. Since processors and traders cannot properly estimate how demand will develop after mid-January, the appetite for purchasing has somewhat dampened. Bale prices have once again taken a small step upward. The most common grades seem to be stabilizing at €21 at the moment.
