The free stock of onions in the Netherlands is about the long-term average. The United Growers Arable Farming (VTA) carried out the first stock inventory for the 2019-2020 season at the beginning of December. The conclusion from the inventory is that the interim position of the free stock of onions is now approximately at the long-term average.
The stock inventory among the participants shows that the delivered volume is approximately 29%. This 29% is in line with the image of the successful exports in the onion sector. However, this export contains a large proportion of onions that have been delivered from non-traditional cultivation areas in the Netherlands. This is because a large part of the land is supplied off-shore in these areas. A considerable volume of onion sets has also been exported.
The stock in absolute tons among VTA members is 5,3% higher than the long-term average. However, 31% of this stock has already been sold. This is because 44% of the red onion stock has already been sold. 26% of yellow onions have been sold. Typically, around 25% of the stock has been sold by this time.
Thanks to good exports
The onions have seen an area expansion of 5,9% this year. An area expansion of 8,8% has even been achieved for seed onions. This expansion was mainly due to non-traditional cultivation areas. The expansion has resulted in above-average production. The fact that the free stock of onions is now at a long-term average is due to the successful export.
