In week 2 of this year, many onions were packed for the final shipment to Senegal. In the weeks that followed, however, it remained very quiet for the packers.
Traditionally, January is a period in which exports to Africa are reduced and the focus of exporters shifts to other destinations. The destinations that now have to pull the cart on the onion market are currently not ordering large volumes of Dutch onions. As a result, packers have little work and they hardly report to the farmer.
As a result, there are few transactions to report in the physical market. The regional stock exchanges in Middenmeer and Emmeloord reflect a calm mood in their quotations. The transactions that have taken place are in price at a lower level than in recent weeks. As a result, all three regional stock exchanges have lowered prices this week. Just like farmers' prices, bale prices are also under pressure.
