In the Netherlands, onion country is bringing some more life to the brewery. What is the picture like in neighboring countries?
The onion market in our eastern neighbors is quiet. We are waiting for new impulses that can shake up the market and onion prices somewhat. The calm market ensures a stable price level, which averages €19,50 for medium sorting (sorted and delivered in big bags, collected from the sorting company).
Austria
A similar picture emerges on the Austrian onion market. Sales in our own country during this period follow a similar pattern as in previous years. Retail promotions should contribute to getting the onion market moving.
In addition, sales of onions on the export market are not going as planned, because the cheap supply of Dutch onions is getting in the way of Austrians. The price range - which has been between €22 and €28 for a long time - is under pressure, causing the top of the range to drop to €26. The prices mentioned are the image for grower prices, delivered sorted in boxes, ex farm.
France
Stable prices also characterize the French onion market, where for normal quality onions the grower receives approximately €12,50 per 100 kilos. Upcoming promotions should entice French consumers to purchase onions, which could give a positive boost to sales. While Austria indicates that it is having difficulty serving the export market, the French report stable sales of onions to Italy.
Poland
Several countries in Europe are having to get used to maintaining onion sales at the same level, after a year with meager supply. Many European countries have harvested more onions than last year and are looking for sales for them. Poland is one of the countries that is an exception.
Poland is therefore a grateful buyer of large volumes of onions for the Netherlands. Volumes that often do not appear in the export statistics. Nevertheless, Poland also reports that sales of good quality onions on the export market are not going smoothly. An average of €24,50 per 100 kg is paid for home-grown onions that are sold in bags on the Polish wholesale markets. Onions of Dutch origin have an average price tag of €30,50 (same conditions).
