It has been a turbulent week at the onion market. After a long period of little trade, there was again a lot of enthusiasm to buy onions this week.
As is often the case in the spring, there is a lot of running and standing still at the onion market. Very few lots were purchased from the farmer after Christmas. Packers purchased many lots in November and December, meaning they had ample stocks for a long time. These stocks were purchased relatively expensively given the bale prices.
That is why few additional onions have been purchased in recent weeks, while efforts were made to use up stocks as much as possible. Now that supplies are becoming increasingly limited, people have to go back to the farm to buy onions. There is now a particular demand for coarse batches with a clear color (charged before the rain).
Fixed mood
However, the mood among onion growers is very stable. As a result, prices have risen and there is a lot of commotion on the market. The regional fairs in Middenmeer and Emmeloord both record a positive difference of €1 for both coarse gradings. The transaction lists also recorded many new transactions this week.
Following the farmer prices, this week also saw increases bale prices. Despite the fact that exporters have more work than at the end of January, the export market is still not booming. There is slightly more demand from Asia, but other destinations are still keeping quiet.
