The most recent onion export figures, those from week 5, give little cause for concern. Onion sales are developing according to a normal pattern. There was certainly no question of a faint-hearted market.
The export figure for week 5 provisionally stands at a volume of 18.648 tons, approximately 1.700 tons more than in week 4. Subsequent export information from previous weeks increased the export total by 83 tons. The season total now stands at 827.337 tons, which corresponds to an average of 26.688 tons per week. And that means the record is still firmly established.
View to the southeast
For the largest buyer of Dutch onions, we should focus on the southeast: Malaysia. That country accounted for the purchase of 2.670 tons and this season in total for 48.098 tons, which is a quarter (5,8%). Mauritania and Guinea came in 2 and 3 with 2.227 tonnes and 1.719 tonnes respectively. In the total list, these countries rank seventh and fifth. It is striking that Brazil, with 35.117 tonnes, ranks between the two countries mentioned.
A special customer in week 5 was Libya with 1.643 tons, making it the fourth largest customer in that week. Great Britain completed the top 5 with a purchase of 1.568 tons, bringing the total volume purchased this season to 53.555 tons.
