Can the bale prices follow the farmer's prices?

Farmer prices for onions have been on the rise lately. This makes it necessary for packers to also raise bale prices. Do they succeed in this?

The mood of onion growers is excellent during this period. Traders and packers regularly visit farmers to buy onions. Meanwhile, higher and higher prices appear on the transaction lists. This only results in onion growers becoming more entrenched in the market.   

In particular, packers that are (partly) focused on small packaging have purchased at higher levels. However, the majority of packers do not go along with the high transactions that are now raging through the market (€19 to €20 in the long term). There is not enough room for this in the bale prices. Although exports are broad, they lack the large volumes that could boost bale prices. For the common sizes, €19 to €21 is paid in the bale.

Significant increase in Goes
Following on from previous weeks, the regional stock exchange committees show a positive adjustment of stock exchange prices. A plus is noted for all gradings. The most striking is the 60% upward sorting in Goes. The stock exchange committee in Goes quotes €15 to €18, which amounts to an increase of €1,50.
