Early carrot is a true quest

The carrot market is still dominated by scarcity. There is strong demand from European buyers, but too little supply to meet this demand. The prices thrive under it.

This means that little changes in the market situation compared to the previous week. There remains a shortage. Especially in the C-peen range, because the product is difficult to find in size this year. The development is clearly slower than in other years. Growers and traders suspect that the easterly wind in March slowed growth considerably. This in combination with the poor soil structure, a difficult sowing season and persistent drought in the spring.

"We all want to harvest and deliver, but the product is not growing enough," says a trader. While last year there were yields of 70 to 80 tons per hectare, now that is sometimes only half. "In order to obtain the tons, more hectares are being cleared," says another trader. No more carrots have been planted this year, so the question is: what effect will this have on the supply later in the season?

In any case, the expectation is that the scarcity will continue for some time. This is currently leading to strong price formation in the carrot. The DCA quotation this week for B-carrot is €28 to €32 per 100 kilos. The price for C-carrot is in the range of €30 to €35 per 100 kilos.
