Van Meir processed the last onions in pool C in week 22. The start was in week 12 (mid-March). During this period the pool performed well compared to periods A and B. Both the price up to 60mm (€14,81 per 100 kilos) and that of 60mm upwards (€16,66) are above previous years. This brings the average to €15,74. This is €1,94 more compared to period B and €1,58 more compared to period A.

The stock market result of Beurs Goes during this period amounts to an average of €16,42. Especially because the onion price doubled in a short time from mid-May.

Disappointing yield
The average hectare yield among Arctic growers for the 2019 harvest year is 36 tons, the company reports in their newsletter. This gives a gross result of €5.666,40 per hectare for delivery in pool C, with which growers unfortunately cannot end the season on a positive note. Although the hectare yield is 16 tonnes more than in the dramatic year of 2018, the financial figures show a different picture. The gross balance for pool C amounts to €7.440 per hectare, with a hefty price of €37 per 100 kilos partly compensating for the low hectare yield.

At the start of the 2019 harvest year, a yield of 50 tons was forecast. This ultimately turned out differently, and the pool suffered as a result. The quality deteriorated sharply in May. The onions 'falling bare' was a particular problem, reports director Leon van Meir. This is due to the low humidity.

Organic market booming
The price for organic red onions is completely different. This amounts to €55,25 (over the entire season) for red seed onions. There was too little product available from the organic yellow onions to form a pool. This result is even €8,13 above the price of the 2018 harvest year (€47,12). The company speaks of a good to stable market for organic onions, due to increasing consumption.
