The first export figure for the 2020 growing season has been published. How do exports compare to the start of 2019?
According to the preliminary figures from the GroentenFruithuis, onion exports (week 27) start with 4.784 tons of onions exported. This figure is in line with the start of the export season a year ago. Then exports started (also in week 27) at 4.481 tons.
Dutch onions are supplied to 47 countries in the first export week of the 2020 growing season. Two countries stand out far above the rest. Great Britain is the largest buyer with 1.203 tons of onions. Ivory Coast follows our western neighbors with 1.102 tons. Furthermore, there is no country that exports more than 500 tons of onions. With 377 tons, Sierra Leone comes closest.
Export record definitively established
With the start of a new export year, the 2019 export season can be closed. Now that all export figures for this season are known, it can be concluded that a new export record has been set. In the 2019 growing season, 1.180.790 tons of onions were exported. This is an increase in the export record by 32.768 tons compared to the 2017 growing season.
