The bale prices of onions are still looking for stability. Because there is currently more demand for onions with a medium grade, the bale prices are above those of the large onions.
Demand is slowly developing on the export markets, which means that packers are also receiving more and more work. Exporters mainly demand medium-grade onions. This demand largely comes from African destinations such as Ivory Coast. Because the coarser grades are currently more difficult to export, the bale price of the coarse onions is lower than that of the medium grades. An overview of the bale prices can be found in the DCA listing Bale price Onions.
Complete question
Although demand among packers is increasing, more and more supply is also coming onto the market. Packers have sufficient supply to meet demand. Bale prices and onion prices are falling, causing packers to take a wait-and-see attitude.
Senegal is usually the largest buyer of Dutch onions. In the first months of the onion season they purchase large volumes of Dutch onions, after which Senegal switches to local harvests in the second half of the season. To protect these local harvests, Senegal works with import quotas. In recent years, the market to Senegal has opened every September. The expectation for this season is that the market will open in mid-August. If this is the case, packers will have a lot more work to do with approximately 2 extra weeks.
Only the Goes stock exchange is listed
