It is mainly Africa that is the clock on the Dutch onion market. Of the 10 largest buyers in week 32, 7 come from the west of Africa.
The provisional export figures for week 32 are known. The counter amounts to 18.698 tons of exported onions. The total export of the current season now stands at 79.412 tons. With 6 published export weeks, this means an average export of 13.235 tonnes per week. While the export figures up to and including week 31 were still in line with the first weeks of last season, the figures are now lagging behind. In the 2019 growing season, the counter stood at 6 tons after 82.922 weeks, which means that the export figures are now 3.500 tons behind.
Africa
In week 32 there are 5 destinations that have imported more than 1.000 tons of Dutch onions. Of these, 4 come from West Africa. In addition, there are 3 other customers from West Africa in the top 10 largest customers. The largest customer has been Ivory Coast in recent weeks. Importers from Ivory Coast purchase a volume of 3.886 tons, bringing the total season to 13.710 tons.
Senegal is the second largest buyer in week 32. Considering the fact that the Senegalese onion market was not yet open in week 32, this raises many eyebrows. The fact is that when onions are shipped, they count towards the export figures. The onions are still in transit for a while before they are unloaded at the ports of Dakar.
Great Britain is the only destination in the top 5 that does not come from Africa. With 1.582 tonnes, the British are the third buyer in week 32. The top five is completed by Mauritania and Guinea.
