On Thursday, August 20 Senegal immediately opened its borders for Dutch onions. Exporters have eagerly taken advantage of this. Many onions have been unloaded in the ports of Dakar in a short time. As a result, the market is quickly saturated, which means that importers from Senegal are currently first clearing stocks before they need new Dutch onions again.

In recent years, this pattern has become more visible in Senegal. It is a market where people want to sell their onions, which has made the market more of a supply market than a demand market. In addition to Senegal, there are other well-known countries in West Africa that currently import Dutch onions. Demand from other continents is currently still limited.

Quiet on the farm
Although the demand from Africa gives packers a lot of work, it is still very quiet on the farm. The onion onions are currently getting in the way of the sowing onions. The yields in the onion sets are generally good. Many packers still have obligations regarding onion sets and are switching to seed onions as much as possible. This creates pressure on the onion onion market.

The bale prices for medium sorting have been stable in recent weeks at a level of €20 to €21. The demand for the coarse grades is currently limited, which means that the bale prices for these grades are at a lower level. An overview of the bale prices can be found in the DCA listing Bale price Onions.

The regional fair in Goes was the only one of the 3 regional fairs to publish a quotation for onion sets this week. For onion onions from the field the quotation is €9 to €13 and for onion onions from the shed the quotation is €14 to €15. In addition to the quotations for onion onions, the stock exchange committee in Goes has also published a quotation for sowing onions, which amounts to €12,50 to €15.
