There is pressure on the African onion market

It is one-way traffic on the onion export market. The demand mainly comes from Africa. What is the impact of Africa on the Dutch export market?

The latest export figures are those from week 34. An analysis of these figures shows that 13.259 tons of onions were exported to the Netherlands in this week. continent Africa. This amounts to 64%. A week earlier, this percentage was as high as 79%. The figures showed a large volume for Senegal, which opened the onion market a week later.

Pressure on bale prices
All in all, exports are very one-sided towards Africa. Processors and exporters are all trying to make a profit from demand from Africa, which is causing pressure on the African market, resulting in price pressure on bale prices.

Trade on the farm
Few onions are bought at the farm. On the one hand, many processors still have onion sets available and on the other hand, many plots have already been purchased at an earlier stage. Most of these plots will be delivered in the coming weeks. Packers therefore have ample stock available.

The 3 regional stock exchanges only list for sowing onions. These quotations are under pressure from all quotation committees. When we compare the quotations, €9 to €12,50 is quoted.
