The market for red onions in particular is currently a lot friendlier. The export ban imposed by India has increased demand for red onions. It is still unclear how long the export ban will last. Because the red onion market did not turn out well last year and there is an area expansion for red onions this season, many processors have kept stocks low. The unexpected demand from Asia therefore resulted in many additional onions being purchased from the farmer in the past 2 weeks.

More yellow onions
Not only is the market for red onions friendlier, more yellow onions have also been purchased in recent weeks. The market for yellow onions has been very quiet for a long time, during this period few additional onions were purchased from the farmer. Onion prices appear to have stabilized at the moment, and with the good harvest conditions of the last 2 weeks, many additional lots have been purchased and have now been shipped in.

Exports are still very dependent on Africa. Now that the demand for red onions has increased, the demand from Asia for yellow onions is also somewhat friendlier. However, large volumes are still lacking and buyers from Asia often ask for difficult packaging, which means that a relatively large amount of work is required for low volumes.

Scholarship awards
The regional stock exchange listings show that the market for yellow onions is in better shape. After 4 consecutive weeks in which stock market prices fell, the stock exchange committees in Goes and Middenmeer indicate an unchanged market this week. The fair committee in Emmeloord puts a plus of €30 on the board for both the 60-60% coarse sorting and the 0.50% sorting.

Normally, red onions are only recorded in Emmeloord. This week the stock exchange committee in Goes also issued a quotation. When we compare the two quotations, the price for red onions is €13 to €16.50.
