The export figures of Dutch onions have been skyrocketing in recent weeks. Do the latest figures once again cause smiling faces in the onion sector?
After record-breaking weeks, the export figure for week 41 is, for a change, no improvement on the figures from a week earlier. However, the export figures will not cause much disappointment: 37.620 tons is a volume to come home with. The total seasonal volume now stands at 375.764 tons, this figure is 19.454 tons ahead of last year's record season.
Not for the first time, Senegal is the largest buyer of Dutch seed onions. In week 41, Senegal purchases a volume of 11.665 tons of onions, bringing the African country's seasonal total to 78.057 tons of onions. This means that the import quota has been filled for more than 62%.
Raise ceiling
In advance, policymakers in Senegal have specified an import volume of 125.000 tons. This quota is 10.000 tons lower than the quota from a year earlier, although the ceiling can be increased later in the season (as happened last year).
The second customer in week 41 is also a well-known name. Ivory Coast accounts for a purchase of 5.830 tons. Ivory Coast's seasonal volume is now 13.400 tonnes ahead of last year's figures. The third buyer in the latest export figures is the Philippines with 2.469 tons of onions. In addition, the following destinations account for a purchase of more than 1.000 tons: Guinea, Mauritania, Mali, Great Britain, Sri Lanka Malaysian and Israel.
