The export figures of Dutch onions this season read like an exciting novel. How long will it take for the first week of 50.000 tons of onions to arrive?
It should be clear that sales of Dutch onions were slowing down a bit towards the holidays. Nevertheless, the figure from week 49 with 34.453 tons is worth it. In particular, week 45, the peak week, has gone through the 47.000-tonne limit. A week with 50.000 tons of onion exports therefore seems a matter of time.
The total volume of subsequent information for the period from weeks 45 to 48 amounts to 1.325 tons. The weekly export average is 30.519 tons. Up to and including week 49, 701.951 tons were exported, based on preliminary information, compared to 629.082 tons last year (+11,6%).
Senegal the leader
Sales in week 49 went to 80 countries, with Senegal leading the way with 8.747 tons and pushing the total purchase this season to 135.491 tons. Ivory Coast passed the 4.450 mark with a decrease of 100.000 tons. Mauritania was in third place with 2.732 tons and lifted the export total to 29.340 tons.
In the Far East, Malaysia, Bangladesh and the Philippines were the largest buyers with 2.105 tons, 2.059 tons and 1.584 tons respectively. Bangladesh had only imported 49 tons of onions up to and including week 754 last year, compared to 23.692 tons this season. Compared to last year, with 27.489 tons, Malaysia is more than 4.300 tons behind last year's schedule.
