Last season (2019 harvest), the Polish industrial market was perhaps the largest buyer of Dutch onions. Is Poland just as emphatic on the market this year?
When there are onions in the Netherlands with quality problems, they can often still be processed via the industrial market in Poland. These companies peel and process the onions or freeze them.
Lots of onions to Poland
Last year an enormous amount of onions ended up on the Polish industrial market. It is difficult to obtain figures for this, because the onions that go to the Polish peeling plants are not included in the export figures that GroentenFruit Huis publishes. However, it should be clear that an incredible amount of onions have been exported to Poland. Machiel Boons from onion trade.com says: "Last year, sales to Poland started extremely early, because there was a crop failure in Poland. At the beginning of July, we already had the first cars driving to Poland and this demand remained for the rest of the season. Because these deliveries are not centrally located, registered, it is difficult to estimate, but I assume that around 100.000 tons of onions left for the Polish industrial market last season, an absolute record."
This year the market to Poland is a lot quieter. The harvest in Poland was reasonable this year, which means that people are no longer as dependent on Dutch onions as they were a year earlier. Many (good quality) onion sets were also exported to the Polish industrial market this year. Currently, Dutch onion sets are still sold to Polish peelers.
