Inside Onions

Senegal provides icing on the cake at the onion market

13 January 2021

With 53 weeks to go and additional information from previous export weeks, a very robust export figure for onions is in the books. An achievement that the Netherlands can justifiably be proud of.

The export figure for week 52 can be called good, with a provisional figure of 26.945 tons, if it is taken into account that it was a shortened working week due to Christmas. And once again it is Senegal that pulled the strings before the borders are closed for the sale of home-grown onions. In week 52, the Senegalese purchased at least 11.079 tons of onions, pushing this season's export figure to 164.475 tons. This result is in 'stark' contrast with the volume imported last year up to and including week 52, 146.536 tonnes. It is clear that compared to the total exported volume of the 2019-2020 season, 170.498 tons, the gap is no longer that great.

Ivory Coast at 2
As in week 51, Ivory Coast is also in second place in week 52 in terms of the largest decrease, although the distance to what Senegal decreased is considerable. Ivory Coast imported 3.887 tons of onions and this season is now good for a purchase of 114.393 tons. This has more than exceeded the total volume shipped to this country in the entirety of last season, 109.464 tons.

Indonesia completed the top 3 largest buyers with a provisional purchase of 2.309 tons, increasing the total volume of the 2020-2021 season to 16.821 tons. In the far east, Malaysia and the Philippines were the other largest buyers with 732 tons (total season 32.553 tons) and 578 tons (total season 33.930 tons) respectively.

In Europe it was the English who led the export cart with an import of 1.257 tons, followed by Belgium with 457 tons and Germany with 229 tons.

Formidable result
The total seasonal volume of onions registered outside the Netherlands up to and including week 52 now stands at 794.361 tons, an average of 30.552 tons per week. With a little bit of luck, 800.000 tons can be reached as an export figure in the first half of the season. But the result can already be described as formidable.
