It was already in the air last week: breaking the 800.000 ton limit in the first half of the onion marketing season. It turned out to be no simple matter, but resulted in a resounding result. Subsequent information may increase the result even further, but the provisional figure of 811.379 tonnes is rock solid. Never before have so many onions been exported in the first half of the season as this season. The final destination concentrated mainly on Africa and the Far East in volume.

Senegal is winding down
It can be seen from the sales of week 53 that Senegal has clearly been winding down. After being the largest buyer of Dutch onions for weeks, it had to give up this place to Malaysia in week 53. Based on preliminary information, this took 2.269 tons of onions and thus increased the export total to 34.822 tons (previous year 37.785 tons). Ultimately, Senegal was not far behind with 2.262 tons. In less time than previous years, a volume of 166.737 tons was exported, compared to last season's export total of 170.498 tons, which was only 1 tons on January 2020, 146.536.

As last week, Ivory Coast is right behind Senegal in terms of the largest decrease. With a provisional figure of 2.026 tons, 116.420 tons of onions have already been exported to this country. Last season, Ivory Coast had only purchased 91.033 tons of Dutch onions until New Year's Eve. So in Ivory Coast, onion sales are also ahead of schedule (+27,8%).

The remaining places in the top 5 are taken by Great Britain with a decrease of 1.170 tons, which is 7.788 tons ahead of last year, and Belgium with 670 tons, now good for 21.732 tons (+12,8%).

The total exported volume of onions means a weekly average of 30.051 tons. With subsequent information from previous export weeks (weeks 48 to 52), the total volume has increased by 2.344 tons, making it the 'largest' customer on paper.
