Stock of free onions larger than last year

The Dutch onion stock is larger than last season. The stock of the Dutch growers is currently also above the five-year average. This is apparent from the stock inventory that the United Growers Arable Farming (VTA) has carried out among its members and which was published today (Friday 23 April).

Among the participants in the study, 66% of the onions have now been delivered. The share of onions sold is therefore 6% to 7% below the 5-year average. 75% of the stock of red onions has been delivered. Approximately 50% of the red onions still in the shed have been sold. This means that 12,3% of the total harvest is still available at the moment. The picture is slightly different with yellow onions, where 61% of the harvest has been delivered. Of the yellow onions, 27% of the total harvest is still available.

Larger stock and more free onions
In tons, the participants in the VTA study have more onions in stock than last season. Compared to the 5-year average, the stock is 28% larger. The share of free onions is also larger than last season. 37% of the current stock has been sold. Last season that was 54% in the same period. The absolute stock of free onions is 22% above the 5-year average. The extremely dry season of 2018/2019 does pull the average down considerably.
