Up to and including week 17, 59.910 tons of onions from New Zealand have arrived in Europe. In the same period last year this was still 71.646 tons, a decrease of 16%. The import figure also lags behind the 6-year average of 64.546 tonnes. The United Kingdom will import more New Zealand onions this year than last year. The total number of onions imported by the UK up to and including week 17 is 5.708 tonnes, compared to 5.592 tonnes last year.

Transport the bottleneck
There does not seem to be any catching up in exports to Europe for the time being. Insiders report that not much more than 5.000 tons can be exported in the coming weeks due to limited logistics capacity.

It is striking that the United States imports many more onions from New Zealand. Up to and including week 17, the Americans have imported 3.144 tons of onions from New Zealand. Not spectacular in absolute tonnes, but an increase of more than 700% compared to the 6-year average of 380 tonnes. Other important markets for New Zealand onions are Indonesia and Malaysia. These countries have so far purchased 17.295 and 5.300 tonnes respectively. That is approximately 1.500 and 2.500 tons less than last season, but is approximately 1.500 tons above the 6-year average for both countries.
