The demand for Dutch onions has increased somewhat in recent weeks. On the supply side, however, it is difficult to find good quality parties.
The provisional export figures for week 16 amount to 16.915 tons of onions. These figures can still be adjusted by subsequent items. Last week, the export figures for the last period were adjusted by 4.679 tons.
European retail is currently in a significantly better position on the market. German retailers in particular have ordered many Dutch onions this week. Orders from our eastern neighbors are also planned for next week.
On the farm, growers are a bit more certain. The cold weather ensures that this season is extended by at least 1 to 2 weeks. The question, however, is which parties will last so long. The quality problems are major at the moment. Skin firmness in particular is an issue. Good skin strength is important, especially for the retail destinations that are currently on the market.
Slight increase in stock market quotations
The stock market quotations showed a slight increase this week. The increase was largest in Goes at €0,75. The fair committees in Middenmeer and Emmeloord were unanimous this week. Both quotes were increased at the bottom, resulting in a quote of €13 to €15. The quotation for red onions also increased further this week. With an increase of €3,50, the quotation amounts to €25 to €30.
Bale prices difficult to increase
Bale prices are difficult to increase. As a matter of fact, the bale prices are €18 to €22 for the most common sizes. The difference in the type of customers is large. The (German) retail destinations are mainly at the top of the bale price quotation and the wholesale destinations in Great Britain and the Eastern European destinations are rather at the bottom of the quotation. An overview of the bale prices can be found in the DCA listing Bale price Onions.
