Due to limited availability of containers as a result of the corona crisis, the industry was not operating at full speed for a long time. There was also competition from other markets that offered onions cheaper than the Netherlands, PPA explains. In addition, during the storage season, batches with quality problems emerged, which ensured a constant supply of onions.

The result of PPA's yellow onion pool ultimately amounts to €16,61 per 100 kilos, upon delivery in week 11. The red onion pool achieved a result of €17,03 per 100 kilos. PPA reports that the participants are satisfied with the result of the yellow onion pool, which is well above the average score for the past season. The pool price for the 2020 harvest is below the 5-year average of €17,77.

Difficult year for red onions
According to PPA, sales of red onions were less easy last year than the quotations suggest. In the autumn, there was mainly demand for red onions from Asia. Fine onions in particular were in demand from buyers. The demand for large onions only started towards the end of the season when the European catering industry opened up. The pool price remains well below the multi-year average of €26,25 per 100 kilos.

For the next season there is room for new growers who want to participate in the pools, PPA reports. This applies to both the red and yellow onion pools. Both ex-land pools are also still open to new growers.
