Due to the wet conditions, few onion sets were harvested last week. However, there are still plenty of plots in the pipeline for the coming weeks. Can the export use these onions? Exports are still calm at the moment. This is normal...
Exports are currently still quiet. This is normal for the month of July. We have to wait until the stocks of our own harvests in West Africa run out, so that the well-known African destinations start ordering Dutch onions again. Demand from Africa usually increases in mid-August and only reaches serious proportions when Senegal enters the market. In recent years, Senegal has opened its market for Dutch onions around the end of August or the beginning of September. Demand is also still limited in other parts of the world.
The quality of many onion sets also leaves much to be desired. While we have had to deal with dry and warm weather in recent years, the wet weather of spring is now causing quality problems in some plots. There are currently sufficient onion sets available to meet the demand from exports. However, the wet weather of the past week has caused delays in the harvesting of many plots.
The regional stock exchange in Goes is the only stock exchange to publish a quote this week. For onion onions from the field, the stock exchange offers a quotation of €8 to €11.
