Onion yield adjusted due to lack of regrowth

An acreage expansion of 11% and a wet growing season seem to be ingredients for a year with an enormous onion yield. However, the previously expected record yield because there is currently little regrowth is now being trimmed down.

The growing season seems to be moving in the opposite direction from last year. Then there was a dry start, but quite a few kilos were added at the end of the growing season. This year the position was quite good a month ago, but the lack of new growth means that the kilos are less than previously thought. This is mainly due to the wet weather this summer. As a result, there are many mildew spots in the plots.

Exports to Africa are starting to increase. Packers have their job and need product for it. Because they have been very quiet on the onion market in recent months, people are now going back to the farm to buy more product. Because the onions have been wearing out very hard in recent weeks and few kilos seem to be growing, growers are becoming more confident again.

Onion prices were under pressure for a long time but are now stabilizing. The fair committee in Goes quoted €6 to €7 for the onion sets from the shed this week. There have been registrations for sowing onions in both Goes and Emmeloord. When these odds are compared, €5,50 to €8,00 is quoted.
