After a few hectic weeks on the onion market, the mood among the grower and processors of onions was a lot calmer this week. What does this have to do with?
Processors have had a quiet time emotionally over the past week. They did have work, but the market felt less hectic than in previous weeks. This is largely due to demand from Africa, which has weakened it. In recent weeks, many onions have been placed on the African quays, for example in Senegal, so that the stocks first have to decrease before large new volumes can be accepted again.
Difficult to increase bale prices
Because the export markets are full of Dutch onions, it is difficult for exporters to raise bale prices. Processors had hoped that bale prices would increase with farmers' prices, but this has not happened. An overview of the bale prices can be found in the DCA listing Bale price Onions.
Because the bale prices and the farmer's prices are not in equilibrium, the demand on the farmer was a lot calmer this week. Moreover, most processors have already done enough shopping to be able to move forward for a while. Despite this, stock prices have risen in the past week. When all quotations are placed next to each other, €8 to €11 per 100 kilos is quoted for seed onions.
