Processors and traders are still quiet on the farm, on the other hand, they are also offered few batches.
Exports have been very variable in recent weeks. The export figures go from 30.000 tons to 40.000 tons and back to 30.000 tons in three weeks. Much depends on the supply to Africa. When one or more boats are loaded for these destinations, the export figures increase. That could be a lot less the following week, because buyers have to get rid of these onions first.
Nevertheless, exports are ahead of the 2020 growing season, when an export record was achieved. Good exports are also necessary this year. According to the CBS harvest forecast, we have to export significantly more onions this year. Because supply in Africa in particular comes in fits and starts, it is difficult for exporters to increase bale prices. An overview of these bale prices can be found in the DCA listing Bale price Onions.
It is quiet on the farm
Things are still quiet on the farm, both on the supply side and on the demand side. Packers are working through their inventories and are therefore not actively purchasing from the farmer. On the other hand, little supply is released from onion growers. With ex-field prices of €10 and sometimes higher, these onion prices have made little progress compared to the ex-field period.
The stock exchange listings in Goes and Emmeloord have taken a small step up this week. When all regional stock exchange quotations are compared. then €10,50 to €13,00 is paid for Dutch seed onions.
