The last published export figures for week 45 are certainly not bad, with an export of more than 35.000 tons. Nevertheless, the lead over the 2020 crop year is decreasing. Exactly one year earlier, the best export figures of last season were achieved. Then in week 45 a volume of 46.792 tons was exported. At that time, three other weeks followed with exports of more than 40.000 tons. High export figures will therefore have to be published in the coming weeks in order to maintain the lead over the 2020 crop year.

In addition to the published exports, many onions are currently going to the industrial market in Poland. This export does not appear in the export lists. However, the main part of Dutch exports currently remains West Africa. Time is now running out for one of the largest export markets in West Africa, namely Senegal. That country announced that the borders for foreign onions will close as of December 31.

Senegal takes this measure every year to protect its own growers. For Dutch exporters, this means that the last onions must be in the container around December 15 in order to reach the quay in Senegal on time. The ban does not necessarily mean that nothing can enter. Depending on the local harvest that is harvested around February, the ministry issues licenses for imports to bridge the period until the new harvest.

Farm prices were under heavy pressure after the release of the harvest estimate by Statistics Netherlands. This week, farm prices finally seem to be stabilizing somewhat. This week, business was mainly between €9 and €10.

The stock market quotations do not yet show any stabilization, because these quotations reflect prices from a week earlier. All three fair committees posted a negative difference this week. When the three odds are compared, they amount to €9 to €10,50. The stock exchange committee in Emmeloord indicates a quiet market, which means that demand is smaller or equal to supply.

This week there is a quotation for red onions
After the stock exchange committees in Goes and Emmeloord did not issue a quotation for the red onions last week (and Emmeloord even for a while longer), both stock exchange committees did issue a quotation this week. However, the differences are large. The 30-60% listing in Emmeloord amounts to €15 to €18, while the 60% upward grading amounts to €20 to €25. In Goes, only the 60% upward sorting is noted, which amounts to €23 to €26.

There are few differences in bale prices this week. An overview of the bale prices can be found in the DCA listing Bale price Onions.
