The price for red seed onions in the ex-land pool of Uienhandel.com is known. How has the pool performed in a market where prices only started rising towards the end of the season?
The pool price for red seed onions from Uienhandel.com amounts to €18,10 per 100 kilos. For comparison: the average ex-country quotation for red onions on the stock exchange in Emmeloord is €15,13 per 100 kilos. "The demand for onions increased, especially towards the end of the field period, and we were able to benefit from this in the pool," says Machiel Boons of Uienhandel.com in an explanation of the pool result.
Boons continues: "The size of the onions in the pool, which at 62% above 60 millimeters was relatively large compared to the national average, also contributed to the result. The average hectare yield was somewhat disappointing, although we also saw large differences between the plots. There were also significant differences in quality. Due to good demand from the processing industry, we were also able to sell parties with problems relatively well, for example to the peeling plant."
Room for growth
Boons is cautiously optimistic about the interest among growers in red onions in the coming season. "The market for red onions is relatively small and that is why some growers are looking for certainty in sales. There are just not many suppliers with a pool for red onions. The vast majority of growers who participated in our pool this season have already inquired about the possibilities for the coming season. It is of course still very early, but if I look at the seed orders, the area is growing slightly. We also have room for that, but the sales opportunities are leading for us."
