Inside Onion market

Difference in size visible at stock exchange listings

17 December 2021

In the first half of the season, when buying onions, there is little distinction between coarse and fine batches of onions. Usually the coarse onions become more expensive after the turn of the year compared to the finer ones. An advance has already been made for this in the stock exchange listings in Goes and Emmeloord.

The onion sector is slowly working towards Christmas. For the month of December, most packers have enough inventory to meet demand. There is therefore little walking on the farm. The stock exchange committees in Middenmeer and Emmeloord therefore indicate a quiet market, which means that the supply is smaller or equal to the demand. However, few onions have been purchased for the first months of 2022. The work supplies for this period are therefore limited for the time being.

The stock exchange committees in Emmeloord and Goes are taking an advance on the onion market after the New Year. In the stock exchange quotations they make a distinction between the 30-60% sorting and the 60% upward sorting. Before the New Year, exports are mainly focused on Africa. Mainly medium graded onions are sent here. This means that the demand for medium-sized and large onions is in balance. If demand from Africa decreases after the New Year, the export market will focus more on destinations that are looking for large onions. This usually means that there will be more distinction between coarse and fine batches on the farm.

Last Monday, the stock exchange committee in Goes quoted €30 to €60 for the 9-10% quotation, with the 60% upward grading they arrived at €9 to €10,50. In Emmeloord, €9 to €9,50 is quoted for the 30-60 sorting and €9 to €10 for the 60% upward sorting.

Last week the best export week of this season was published, in week 46 a volume of 43.712 tons of onions crossed the Dutch border. However, the published export figure for week 47 is a lot lower at 34.760 tons. The export volume is mainly dependent on whether or not religious boats with onions sail to Africa.

Bale prices remain at a stable level. An overview of these bale prices can be found in the DCA quotation Bale price of Onions.
