Senegal is usually the largest buyer of Dutch onions. This year there are two other countries that want to compete for the honour.
Many onions have been loaded for Senegal in recent weeks. In the most recent export figures (the week before Christmas), Senegal purchased a record number of onions with 18.946 tons. The import quota has now expired, but until last week Senegal purchased many Dutch onions.
After Senegal, Ivory Coast is currently the largest buyer on the Dutch export lists. Many onions have also been exported to Ivory Coast recently. These volumes are larger than in recent years in the same period. In the most recent figures, the difference between Ivory Coast and Senegal is approximately 35.000 tonnes in favor of Senegal. Although exports to Ivory Coast generally decrease after the New Year, this market is still open. There is therefore a real chance that Ivory Coast, not Senegal, will become the largest buyer of Dutch onions.
Another candidate competing for the title of 'largest customer' is Poland. Exports to Poland are not fully visible in the export figures. The onions used for peeling are not included here. Poland will therefore not be the largest buyer in the export list, but in practice the country will certainly compete for the title. Many onions have already crossed the border for Polish peelers. This sales will continue until the end of the season.
More trade on the farm
There is more walking on the farm again. Many packers have done a lot of shopping, especially before Christmas. However, work supplies are still limited for the coming period. There are therefore many packers who want to replenish these stocks.
Of the three regional agricultural fairs, only the fair committee in Goes recorded a plus this week, the 30 to 60% coarse sorting increased by €0,13. All other odds remain unchanged. When the odds are compared, the 30/60% sorting costs €9,00 to €10,25 and the 60% upward sorting costs €9 to €11. The stock exchange committee in Emmeloord does indicate a price-containing market, which means that supply is smaller or equal to demand.
Few changes are visible in the bale prices. An overview of the bale prices can be found in the DCA listing Bale price Onions.
