There is optimism among Dutch onion growers, with the result that the farmer's price has risen in the recent period. However, onion packers are in trouble because the bale prices do not increase in line with the farmers' prices.
Even though the export figures are no longer at the level they were before New Year's Eve, the export figure for week 1 is more than excellent at 25.123 tonnes. Last season, an average of 27 tons of onions were exported in the second half of the season over 14.837 weeks. The start of 2022 is also better than the first week of 2021, when only 1 tons of onions were exported in week 12.547. However, the export figures for week 1 2022 do include figures for delayed exports to Senegal. Onions are currently no longer exported to these important export destinations.
There is a lot of atmosphere on the farm. This is mainly due to the short working inventories of the packers. Because the quality of the onions is disappointing, every effort is being made to reserve the best lots in advance. As a result, a number of high transactions will eventually be reported, which will only strengthen the mood among onion growers.
A lot of positivity can be read from the stock exchange quotations, which is topped by the steady and price-loving mood displayed by the stock exchange committees in Emmeloord and Middenmeer. This means that supply is less than or equal to demand. When the stock exchange quotes are compared, €30 to €60 is quoted for the 8,50-11% coarse sorting and €60 to €9,50 is quoted for the 11,00% upward sorting.
Unlike farm prices, bale prices do not want to rise. Now that export demand has decreased, it is difficult to increase bale prices. An overview of the bale prices can be found in the DCA listing Bale price Onions.
