The stock of free onions has now fallen below the long-term average. The United Growers Arable Farming (VTA) reports this after the stock inventory among its members. Compared to December, this is a considerable catch-up.
Approximately 51% of the total onion harvest has now been delivered. Compared to last season, 13,3% more was delivered. 68,3% of red onions were delivered compared to 53,4% the previous season. The stock of onions still in the sheds of VTA members is 13% more in absolute tons than last season. Compared to the long-term average, the stock is 5,7% higher. The stock of free onions is 3,4% below the multi-year average, if the extremely dry year 2018 is not taken into account. At the previous inventory in December, the stock of free onions was still 13,6% above the long-term average. Of the red onions, 22,9% of the total harvest is still available and for yellow onions the percentage is 39,4%.
VTA states that a considerable volume still needs to be sold, but notes that a positive and steady mood dominates the market. The export figures up to and including week 4 seem to indicate that sales are less stagnant than last year. In addition, sales to Poland provide a solid foundation in the market.
