It is difficult to give direction to the onion market in recent weeks. The moods given by the exhibition committees in Middenmeer and Emmeloord are changing rapidly.
The demand from onion exports this week was comparable to the previous weeks. Demand mainly comes from Africa, Great Britain and Southern Europe. In addition, demand from Poland has also increased enormously in recent weeks.
Demand is not yet really breaking through on the farm. €70 was paid this week for a number of lots with many 15mm+ onions. However, it is more difficult to find a buyer for onions with an average size. Many growers have a lot of confidence in the onion market, but so far the market has not ignited. Packers continue to hold back because they find it difficult to dispose of the medium grades.
The most striking quotations this week were those in Emmeloord. For the rough quotation they arrive at a quotation of €13 to €15. In addition, the 30-60% coarse sorting also increased this week by €0,75 in Emmeloord. While the stock exchange committee in Middenmeer described the onion market on Wednesday as quiet, the stock exchange committee in Emmeloord described the onion market as price-bearing a day later. A week earlier this was exactly the opposite. It indicates that the mood in the onion market is very changeable.
The bale prices for the supermarket are rising a little further. The other sortings remain at a comparable level. An overview of the bale prices can be found in the DCA listing Bale price Onions.
