With the further shrinking of the herbicide supply for onions, the need for the strictest possible spraying schedule grows. Soil herbicides are becoming increasingly important.
Now that more than 85% of the onions have already been sown nationally, the start of weed control is fast approaching. It won't get any easier in 2022. If you put it together, you will see that we have mainly lost contact means. As a result, agents with soil effect are getting an increasingly prominent place in weed schedules."
Spray interval up to one week
The weed strategy recommended by Steven Dorrestijn, crop advisor at Syngenta, traditionally starts with burning off just before emergence. "The shorter the time of emergence, the better". The glass tray trick is a great tool to monitor the emergence of onions. If they come up there, the rest will follow a few days later and you can get started with, for example TOUCH DOWN QUATTRO®. Once the onions have reached the top, it is important to stick to a spraying schedule that is as tight as possible. Experiences in previous years show that weekly LDS sprays simply give the best results; even in dry years. If you maintain a longer interval, you are asking for problems. This also applies if you increase the dose. The weeds then become too large. And we lack corrective agents (contact herbicides). If a week-long interval becomes difficult due to expected rainfall, choose a shorter one and lower the dosage of your LDS mix a bit. The latter is important. A normal dosage on moist soil is no problem. But if you still expect a lot of precipitation after spraying, you have to lower the dosage. Because then you get accelerated leaching and that costs onions.
Custom Made
The resources for the LDS mix must of course be adjusted to the weed stock and the growth stage. The onion is especially sensitive in the staple and flag leaf stage. The plant is then still growing on the bud. The onion only grows on the root from the first pipe and can withstand a beating." The LDS mix is tailor-made in which DUAL®Gold en BOXER® definitely deserve a spot. DUAL Gold allowed after emergence but not in the flag leaf stage. The label offers space for up to 1,5 liters per hectare per crop cycle, so you can come back several times and take advantage of the long-lasting effect on ragwort, black nightshade, chamomile and redshank. And don't forget the annual grasses. For BOXER the application moment starts from the first real pipe. BOXER is the perfect LDS partner against Milkweed's Foot, Wall, Buttonweed and Black Nightshade, among others.
Important issues
For the purpose of DUAL Gold en BOXER There are a few important points to consider. Spray with a coarse drop (DRT class 90%). DUAL Gold may not be used on sandy soil and groundwater protection areas, see the Sandfinder app. BOXER finally, it can affect the wax coating. Therefore, wait with the next spraying until the wax layer has sufficiently recovered.
