The first harvested onions of the 2022 cultivation season are not long in coming. The old harvest, on the other hand, is not over yet. Because the onions are starting to wear out, it is difficult to get good quality onions.
The 2021 growing season is coming to an end. The first winter onions of the new growing season will be harvested in about ten days. As usual, exports slowly switch back at the end of the growing season. This is also the case now. The last published export week was week 20. In this week, 16.145 tons of onions were exported.
Last week a lot of onions were sold on the farm. Packers are keeping inventories short, which means there have been few transactions this week. Although the onions are not finished yet, the remaining batches are starting to wear out. Good quality onions are therefore limited in availability. The lower quality usually finds its way to the industrial market in Poland. However, this market has declined considerably in terms of price and sales.
The stock market quotations give mixed results. In Goes and Middenmeer both rough quotations make a small step down. In Emmeloord, the stock exchange listing describes the onion market as quiet, although the 60% upward grading is a small step up. When all quotations are compared, €30 to €60 is paid for the 13/15% coarse sorting and €60 to €14 for the 16% upward sorting.
The bale price remains unchanged compared to last week. Exporters need top quality onions for the last weeks of the season. This keeps bale prices down. An overview of the onions can be found in the DCA listing Bale price Onions.
