The price for the red seed onions in the onshore pool of Uienhandel.com was announced this week. It is the second year that Uienhandel.com has a pool for red onions. How has the pool performed in a turbulent onion market?
The price for red seed onions in the ex-farm pool of Uienhandel.com 60% coarse amounts to €27,02 per 100 kilos. For the finer batches, the pool has achieved €23,01 per 100 kilos. It is the second year that Uienhandel.com has a pool for red onions. "This season there was mainly a demand for large red onions," says Machiel Boons of Uienhandel.com in an explanation of the pool result. In contrast to yellow onions, where prices increased during the export period, the price of red onions remained fairly stable. "The stock exchange in Emmeloord has not had a quotation for 30-60% coarse red from the field this season. Fortunately, we have been able to sell the finer lots well in our pool and I think that with our prices for both the coarse and finer lots, we have got the most out of it for our participants."
According to Boons, the dry course of the year was clearly reflected in the yields of the participants in the pool. "Growers who can irrigate have achieved significantly higher yields." Boons is very pleased with the quality of the onions. "Tare is always a tricky point. We have therefore given extra rewards to growers who have supplied good onions. We pay an extra quality premium in the pool for lots where the tare percentage is 7% or lower."
