Onion exports are shifting to European buyers

Onion exports took a big step back in the second week of 2023 after a far above average first week of the year. It was to be expected that exports would take a step back, and with exports close to the five-year average, exports do not disappoint.

The export figure for week 2 amounts to 20.156 tons of onions, according to the figures from KCB/GroentenFruit Huis. Onion exports this season were therefore slightly below the five-year average for week 2, which stood at 21.379 tons. This brings the total export so far this season to 815.509 tonnes.

Neighboring countries buy onions
Senegal is still the largest buyer of Dutch onions with 6.687 tons. However, in second and third place we find European countries. Great Britain remains a stable buyer and purchased 2.794 tons of onions, followed by Belgium 1.402 tons. In fourth and fifth place we again come across African countries, namely Ivory Coast and Guinea, both of which also purchased more than 1.000 tons of onions from the Netherlands.
