In the second half of the onion season, the interest of African buyers usually decreases. That pattern can also be seen this season. But where African countries are withdrawing somewhat, European buyers are cautiously presenting themselves.
In week 5, 17.623 tons of onions were exported from the Netherlands, according to figures from KCB/GroentenFruithuis. That is 1.000 tons less than last week and below the five-year average. Yet it is certainly not an export figure that the sector should be ashamed of. Many onions have already left in the first half of the season and the 2022 harvest was significantly smaller than that of 2021.
In week 5, 3.636 tons of onions were transported across the North Sea to Great Britain, which was the largest buyer. Spain is at number two, accounting for 2.239 tonnes. At number 3 is another African country, namely Guinea, which imported 1.656 tons of Dutch onions. Malaysia is the last destination to purchase more than 1.000 tons with 1.250 tons.
