Seen from a distance, it seems as if not much is happening on the onion market. But looks could be deceiving. The supply of really good onions is certainly not over, while there is still a demand. On the other hand, there is enough supply of onions with a story, while sorters are not waiting for that.
The first two weeks of May are almost over and keeping the onions good until this time and even longer is a challenge. It is therefore not surprising that there is a supply of onions that can no longer be kept (germination, cracks, thin skin, etc.). Due to the relatively cold spring, these problems may come to light later than in recent years. When it comes to large onions with a problem that are suitable for peeling, there are certainly buyers for them. Provided the price is right, of course. These are just not the Dutch sorters. The sorting companies are looking for quality, at least as far as they are on the market. There are few who want to build up a position at the tail end of the season. Customers of the sorters for big bags and small packaging remain on the market, but want quality and not at any price. At the current price levels, sorters are wary of claims and do not just go along with everything.
Tough market
All in all, trade is not getting any smoother. The grower or speculator sees that there remains quite a demand for Dutch onions from the 2022 harvest and takes confidence from that. There weren't that many really good onions anymore and growers dare to ask €70 or more for them. Some sorters are willing to do so, but only if they have a sales order in return. Due to the relatively high prices on the farm compared to the bale price, there are also sorters who are giving up for this season. The remaining group of processors is becoming smaller and if the number of customers remains the same, those who persist will be relatively busier. And that helps the mood, although the expensive onions of March leave a bitter aftertaste in an otherwise cloyingly sweet season.
De DCA quotation Bale price of Onions This week, just like last week, take a step back. The price range remains unchanged. But demand has now picked up somewhat compared to the last few weeks and there is no need to peddle that. On average (all sizes together) it is not easy to reach €75 with a good batch.
