Onion exporters have managed to keep up the momentum for a long time. But as the season progresses and more foreign onions enter the European market, exports start to decline somewhat.
In week 17, Dutch onion exporters exported 10.842 tons of onions, according to figures from KCB/GroentenFruit Huis. That is more than 2.500 tons less than in week 16. The five-year average for week 17 is 13.977 tons. In the 2018/19 season, exports fell well below 10.000 tons this week. A total of 1.040.694 tons of onions were exported in the current season.
Export European party
In the top 3 largest customers, the penny is changing. Great Britain remains the most important buyer, but at 2.718 tons it purchased more than 650 tons less than last week. Germany follows next with 1.611 tonnes, moving up one place. Spain dropped one place and took 1.197 tons. Export remains a real European party. The first non-European destination is in thirteenth place and is Mauritania with 118 tons. In total, the Dutch onions went to 63 different countries, with Saudi Arabia last with 8 kilos.
