Optimism is once again gaining the upper hand on the onion market. The group of sorters that continues to run is getting smaller and smaller. On the other hand, the pool of onions on the market is also shrinking. The market is therefore falling into a pattern that we have seen more often this season.
Nerves of steel remain a requirement in the onion market. While it seemed a month ago that we would be heading quietly towards the new harvest, last week's revival is now continuing and even increasing. The price for field crops is ahead of the bale price. The growers or speculators sense their opportunity and the €1 is now buzzing around in onion land again. That is still a bridge too far at the moment, but €90 has reportedly been paid.
Several sorters are scratching their heads at these prices. The bale price is really making a step, but not enough to justify such field crop prices. A considerable group of sorters have already dropped out and that group is only growing. It is only the true enthusiasts who remain.
High expectations
Onion onions are increasingly coming into the spotlight now that the old harvest has been largely eliminated. The growth is good and the onions generally have good foliage. A shower would be welcome and where irrigation is possible, the reels have now been removed from the shed. The prices for onion onions show quite a wide variation. This is partly due to the sales constructions. One person wants a price per kilo, another prefers to do something based on participation and the next wants an amount per hectare. What is now becoming clear is that growers have confidence in the onion sets and the trade wants to go along with this.
De DCA quotation Bale price of Onions has again taken a significant step up this week, although there are still major differences between sorters. The average bale price for a normal good batch of onions is again €85 per 100 kilos. Quality is an important point. The onions from mechanical cooling are generally in very good condition, but onions from outdoor storage wear out very quickly, according to sorters.
