The stock exchange listing in Goes for a new harvest of onion sets got off to a flying start last Monday. Because there is a lot of movement and trading on the market, the growers exchange started listing earlier than usual.
With the growth retardation of the current seed onions, the high prices of the old 2022 harvest and an empty market to start in, there has been a lot of movement in the new harvest onion onions market in recent weeks. Prices continued to rise, as did the number of transactions completed. To provide guidance to the grower, the listing committee in Goes therefore records earlier than in other years. They recorded €35 to €40 per 100 kilos from the field for both the coarse and fine size grading of onion sets, considerably higher than has been the case in recent years.
Plots are listed differently
With several weeks to go before the onion onion harvest really starts, a lot can still grow and happen in terms of the weather. The plots differ in terms of growth. Just like with the sowing onions, the early planted onion sets are in good condition and reasonable yields can be achieved. Certainly the plots that can be supplied with water maintain growth. Other plots leave much to be desired and much remains to be done.
It is clear that the mood of the old harvest has far from disappeared and has been transferred to the onion sets. Also to the sowing onions. However, on average, this harvest is expected later than other years, which means that there is more room for onion sets. Add to this the virtually empty market (except for imported onions). However, the demand must be there, even with this higher price level. One comment is that onion sets are a different market than seed onions and, given their quality, are not suitable for every destination.
