After a cautious start, onion exports are getting better and better. In the third week of the 2023/24 export season, exports are above the five-year average and we are approaching the weekly figure last year.
In week 29, 18.229 tons of onions were exported, according to the latest figures from KCB/GroentenFruit Huis. That is more than 5.000 tons more than in week 28. In the first three weeks of this season, a total of just over 38.000 tons were exported. Compared to last season, we are more than 10.000 tons behind.
The growth in exports mainly comes from African buyers. However, the largest buyer of Dutch onions remains Great Britain, good for 3.258 tons in week 29. Exports to Guinea almost doubled and amounted to 3.105 tons. The West African country is therefore hot on the heels of the British. Third place in weekly exports is Senegal with 2.152 tons. In total, there were 67 different countries that imported Dutch onions.
