Which way are the onions going? Who knows may say. Growers are more moderate in the prices they ask than a few weeks ago. On the other hand, sorters are also careful to record a lot.
The demand for onions largely comes from a few countries in West Africa, with Senegal in the lead. "These remain special countries to do business with," is a comment that is often made. Getting onions there is always possible, but the financial settlement is another matter. This happens every year, but at current prices there is a lot of money in circulation and that is an extra risk according to insiders. The demand for onions is currently good due to, among other things, a boat for Senegal that must be loaded next week. It is not without reason that sorters and exporters would like to see a broader base.
Doubt
The doubt on the buyer's side is reflected in the prices they offer to growers. "If you make an offer for €30 on seed onions ex field, you will no longer be sent away immediately," according to a sorter. Delivering onion onions straight from the field, if available, for €35 is not unusual this week. But it does not seem to be the case that the trade is now joining in en masse. Especially if there is some additional supply of onions from growers without or with too little storage, a further drop in the price cannot be ruled out. Whether and how large that supply is is also subject to discussion. Some people think that this is a long way off because top yields are not expected, while others think that yields in the 'new onion areas' look reasonable to good and that this is precisely the group that is set up to deliver from the field.
