15 September 2023 - Jurphaas Lugtenburg

It is difficult to see how the flag hangs in onion country. Confidence in the onion market appears to be growing among sorters and traders. However, this does not immediately lead to much more desire to buy. First there are the agreements already made that must be handled properly.

The onion harvest has made considerable progress in recent weeks, although in some cases not without consequences for quality. High temperatures and a harsh sun are not ideal and that has been proven again and again. This week the temperature was better, but rain threw a spanner in the works. The showers were very localized, but in general they did not cause any major problems.

There are major differences in the quality and grading of field crops. Growers who are convinced that they have top product do not even hesitate, so to speak, and simply drive them in. There is still a danger there. Some growers sometimes have a tendency to overestimate their onions. If you are not on top of it, an initially manageable problem can get out of hand, resulting in the onions having to be cleared prematurely. And a compelling offer is rarely good for the price, just look at the potatoes.

Risk
Traders and sorters also know that not all onions are equally good and therefore only buy a limited number of onions from the field for the purpose of preserving them. They prefer to leave that risk to the grower. Partly because of this, there is not a lot of trade on the farm. Of course, it also plays a role that the necessary consignments have been recorded early in the season and must now be collected. However, this does not happen everywhere without a struggle. Buyers who bought at the peak are quite strict about quality and growers who sold too early are also looking for ways to avoid their obligations, some insiders report.

De DCA quotation Bale price of Onions remains stable this week. The price for triplets and middles is around €45 and that rises to just above €51 for the supers. Several sorters operate with relatively expensive purchased onions and have every interest in keeping the bale price in check, even if they may miss an order as a result.
