Records may not be broken with exports this onion season and there are complaints here and there that we are lagging behind compared to last season. But when a boat is moored off Africa, the mood is suddenly much more positive. The export figures show why.
In week 38, 35.290 tons of onions were exported by the Dutch sector, according to figures from KCB/GroentenFruit Huis. That is 9.000 tons more than in week 37. A total of 260.421 tons were exported this season. This means that exports are almost 20% behind those of last season, although the 2022/23 season was a very large outlier. Over the years 2017 to 2021, the average export was 257.151 tons. Compared to those years, we are even slightly ahead this season.
Senegal was by far the largest importer of Dutch onions in week 38 with 12.147 tons. Ivory Coast follows at a great distance, which imported 3.911 tons of onions from the Netherlands. Great Britain purchased more onions compared to week 37, reaching 38 tons in week 3.088. In total, the exporters served customers in 80 different countries, of which nine countries purchased more than 1.000 tons this week.
